Unisys Helps Australian Organisations Reduce Operating Costs and Increase Business EfficiencyClient engagements feature Business Process Outsourcing; ITIL Best Practice; Multisourcing Services Integration; Security Solutions; and Industry Expertise
SYDNEY, 8 July 2009 – Unisys Australia has started 2009 with a range of contract wins and extensions to existing client relationships across the IT services company’s local focus areas of end user services, business process outsourcing, and security, with specialised expertise in industry-specific solutions.
“While it is a tough economic environment, Australian organisations are looking for innovative ways to reduce their operating costs and improve business efficiency while retaining the flexibility and capacity to be able to respond to market changes,” said Andrew Barkla, Vice President and General Manager of Unisys Asia Pacific.
“For commercial organisations this means being able to meet budget reduction demands in response to the global financial crisis while still maintaining core operations, meeting compliance requirements and being able to quickly take advantage of market opportunities as they arise. Meanwhile government agencies are looking for ways to deal with reduced funding, citizen demand for services and a heightened awareness of security.
“As a result, the organisations we work with are turning to improved business processes and streamlined technical infrastructure to help them reach these goals. This applies both to new clients and existing clients who want a new approach. Ultimately it’s about helping them to reduce costs and improve processes now – without harvesting the future,” Mr Barkla said.
Strategic outsourcing
This trend is reflected in the type of services that Unisys has been engaged to provide to Australian organisations. For example, Business Process Outsourcing is proving to be a growth area with RHG Home Loans renewing its long-term relationship with Unisys and another major bank outsourcing its mortgage processing to Unisys in 2009. Unisys uses Six Sigma Lean methodology to reengineer and implement optimised processes, and technology if required, to provide greater efficiency and cost effectiveness in the mortgage processing cycle.
The Australian National Audit Office (ANAO) extended its 12-year outsourcing relationship with Unisys by an additional five years. Unisys refreshed its approach to end user and infrastructure support for this long-term client by using the Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) set of practices and policies to improve both service delivery efficiency and quality. In addition, ANAO appointed Unisys as its Multisourcing Services Integrator to strengthen collaboration between the internal teams and 17 external service providers. This approach aims to provide greater transparency and reporting across ANAO’s IT service delivery organisation to help achieve better efficiency, effectiveness and coordination of IT management in line with the recommendations of the Gershon Report.
Meanwhile, Unisys has also successfully transitioned IT support services for the Australian Department of Defence, following the contract win in February 2008. Covering 460 locations nation-wide, the transition is a large and complex change management program.
Under the next transition phase, Unisys will standardise IT support processes nationally to help improve the efficiency of support provided to the civilian and military areas of Defence across Australia.
“Our work at both the ANAO and Australian Department of Defence are examples of how Unisys works closely with government department and agencies to improve business processes and better use resources to achieve the dual goals of high service delivery to the Australian people while being accountable for use of public funds,” Mr Barkla said.
Security Solutions
Unisys expertise in security solutions is evident in two new state government initiatives.
Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads selected Unisys to provide facial image processing technology and services for the new Queensland Driver Licence. The new smart card licence is designed to significantly improve security for over three million of the state’s licence holders, streamline administration of the licensing system and reduce identity fraud. Under the five-year contract, Unisys will provide facial verification software, facial image capture devices, case management software and associated services.
The NSW Police Force selected Unisys in a three-year deal to implement and provide maintenance services for an end-to-end digital imagery management system to manage and protect the approximately 1 million digital images taken annually by forensic teams as well as images and video footage received from the public. This system is designed to allow the Police Force to protect images as evidence while streamlining the process of managing, sharing and accessing them to save critical time in criminal investigations.
On the commercial security front, Unisys signed a five year renewal with international airlines operating to and from Australia to continue to provide a baggage reconciliation system for 44 international airlines operating from the eight Australian international airports at Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Cairns, Perth, Adelaide, Darwin and the Gold Coast. The baggage reconciliation system links passengers and bags and tracks both as they move through the system. Each year airlines must secure and validate up to 20,000,000 bags for approximately 10,000,000 air travellers on international flights to or from Australia. The engagement is managed by the Board of Airline Representatives Australia (BARA), an industry representative organisation for airlines.
Industry Expertise
Providing industry specific application solutions is a key focus area for Unisys covering the public sector, transportation industry and telecommunications service providers. In the public sector Unisys focuses on solutions for law enforcement and national security – such as the NSW Police Force, Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads, and Australian Department of Defence engagements described above.
In the telecommunications sector, in May 2009 Unisys launched a fully converged messaging service under the Unisys Messaging Bureau, that integrates fixed, mobile and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telecommunications for Asia Pacific telecommunications service providers. These hosted services that can be integrated into a branded product by the telecommunications provider include a single voice mailbox that combines messages left on separate VoIP, mobile and fixed phones, and a web-based tool to access and manage fax, voice and email messages in one inbox.
Unisys solutions for the transportation sector cover business operations, passenger and security services. In 2009 global airline Cathay Pacific extended its license agreement with Unisys Australia for the Unisys Passenger Service System and Logistics Management System solutions through 2012. The Passenger Service System suite of applications enable Cathay Pacific to generate flight schedules, display seat availability, manage flight inventory, record passenger bookings, and handle passenger check-in and departures at airports across its network. The Logistics Management System suite of cargo applications enable Cathay Pacific to manage its cargo operations including inventory control, bookings, warehouse operations and customs interfaces across its world-wide network. Both applications are fully hosted by Unisys.
