Investec Expands Global IT Strategy with Unisys Real-Time Infrastructure Virtualisation Solution
SYDNEY, July 22, 2008 – Investec Bank has chosen Unisys Corporation (NYSE: UIS) to implement the next stage of its global virtualisation strategy, at the bank’s Australian operations. The two companies are discussing implementation in other markets as well.
The Australian engagement is part of Investec’s global IT strategy to standardise the server, storage and backup environment with a single best-of-breed solution. This is intended to enable easy configuration of new sites to support Investec’s growing international business and allow service levels and methodologies to be applied consistently in all regions. The Australian engagement follows a similar one Unisys signed with Investec South Africa in 2006.
The initial engagements include enterprise consolidation and virtualisation services. These complement the installation of Unisys ES7000 Enterprise Servers running the VMware environment and EMC storage systems using the EMC OpenScale utility model.
The Unisys solution for Investec makes virtualisation a key part of a real-time infrastructure driven directly by business requirements. This not only offers the traditional benefits of consolidating servers to improve utilisation rates, reduce space and prevent server sprawl. It also allows Investec to easily adjust computing capacity up or down as necessary and reconfigure infrastructure to meet the company’s changing needs as it expands its international network.
“As Investec is expanding in Australia and other markets around the world, we selected Unisys because they provide global account management and architecture governance whilst still being flexible enough to allow regional autonomy and management,” said Ric Modesto, chief information officer, Investec Bank Australia.
Through the professional services delivered in the Australian engagement, Unisys consultants will provide knowledge transfer and support that will enable the Investec team to operate their own infrastructure on an ongoing basis. Additional services provided under the agreement include database consolidation and migration to an SQL environment, disaster recovery design and implementation and re-development of operational processes designed to support a virtual environment. Consolidation of SQL databases within one partition of the ES7000 Enterprise Server will enable high availability and performance for business-critical applications.
“Unisys ability to demonstrate the broad range of skills needed to establish and manage a flexible, global real-time infrastructure relying on virtualisation was critical to our success in securing this important and exciting project,” said Geoff Dickson, vice president Asia Pacific sales and service, Systems & Technology, Unisys Asia Pacific.
