Australians looking for more security assurances as use of online payments from mobile phones and PDAs starts to growBanks seen as more secure, online retailers least, when it comes to integrity of transactions on mobile devices – according to new Unisys Research
Sydney, 15 July 2008: The majority of Australians say they would not consider using a mobile phone or PDA for online transactions including banking or shopping.
The results are new research released as part of the Unisys Security Index which looks at the attitudes of Australians toward mobile devices and the means by which they can be used for payments ‘on the run’.
In the data released today, 78% of Australian adults aged 18+ say they would not use a mobile phone or PDA (personal digital assistant) to pay a bill, shop or bank online.
“Payments and transactions via mobile devices are an emerging innovation in service delivery, the beginnings of which we are now seeing evidence of in Australia” said Unisys Asia Pacific security spokesperson, Jane Evans.
“What these results show is that Australians want greater assurance that mobile transactions are secure - and this is not surprising in light of the increasing concern about financial security expressed in the May 2008 Unisys Security Index.
“We wanted to find out exactly how many Australians currently use, or would consider using, mobile devices for various transactions and the answers were telling:
“Even in the embryonic stages of growth in Australia, it is clear that Australians would like greater confidence that shopping, banking or paying bills from mobile devices is secure,” Ms Evans said.
At least 1 in 2 Australians believe that the transactions on mobile devices are either not very or not at all secure.
When asked whether they believed that mobile phones and PDAs were very secure for paying bills or shopping online, Australians gave the following responses:
Overall, how secure do you consider mobile phones and electronic personal devices or PDAs to be for paying bills, banking or shopping online?
In terms of the types of transactions which might be made on a mobile device, it seems Australians believe banks, and not online retailers, provide the best security.
Which of the following do you think would provide the best security when using a mobile phone or an electronic personal organiser for paying bills, banking or shopping online?
“The survey figures released today show that there is a high degree of caution held by Australians in regard to mobile transactions.
Like all new or emerging technologies, there is bound to be a settling in period during which people become more familiar and consequently, more confident in the transaction’s security and convenience,” said Ms Evans.
The Unisys Security Index provides a unique insight into the attitudes of Australians on a wide range of security related issues.
Organisations and governments today confront potential security threats that didn’t exist a decade ago, or, if they did, were not seen as such a pressing concern. These security threats are global and their effects impact individuals on a daily basis. Unisys approach to security goes beyond ‘bits and bytes’ recognising that there are a broad set of political, economic and consumer forces that impact the security ‘ecosystem’. We believe that the most effective solutions are going to be those formed through collaboration across interests, sectors, borders and geographies.
