RailCorp Selects Unisys for Key Enterprise Content Management Projects based on EMC’s Documentum

RailCorp on track for a single web interface for all electronic content

SYDNEY, May 8, 2008 – Unisys has been selected by Rail Corporation of New South Wales (RailCorp) for two strategic projects, the first to develop an Enterprise Content Management (ECM) methodology, and the second to implement an ECM platform based on EMC Documentum.

Enterprise Content Management is using digital technologies to capture, manage, store, preserve, and deliver content and documents related to organisational processes.  It encompasses records retention, document management, knowledge sharing and work flow as well as the personalisation and standardisation of content.  The benefit of ECM is that it overcomes internal silos within organisations to easily access, share and update information.

RailCorp was formed by the merger of the State Rail Authority of NSW and the metropolitan functions of the Rail Infrastructure Corporation in 2004. It aims to provide safe, clean and reliable passenger services through its two brands, CityRail and CountryLink.  Each weekday the NSW rail network supports more than 900,000 passenger journeys and 190,000 tonnes of freight movements.

“In establishing ICT services for RailCorp, our aim was to adopt a long term view and as far as possible take an enterprise approach for our key programs. This is how we are addressing ECM, to  first set the standards and definitions that will apply across the entire organisation in an ‘enterprise methodology’ so that subsequent ECM projects will support the ongoing requirements of RailCorp,” said Vicki Coleman, Group General Manager, ICT RailCorp.

A reliable and robust enterprise-wide content management system is a key step to achieve RailCorp’s objective for all employees be able to use a single web user interface or portal to access all electronic content.

“Ultimately we want RailCorp’s customers and third parties to be able to access content and services seamlessly and securely using the same underlying technology platforms.  This will support the rapid sharing of the most up-to-date information both internally and externally,” said Ms Coleman.

In the first project, Unisys is designing the enterprise methodology to ensure a consistent approach to developing, deploying and maintaining ECM across the organisation.  This best practice approach will allow RailCorp to rollout ECM applications while ensuring a consistent, cohesive and planned IT strategy.  A key feature of the enterprise methodology is that it uses out-of-box software solutions, EMC Documentum and FAST, that are configured to meet the long term requirements of the business, allowing the fast deployment of reliable market-tested technology.

Unisys was selected for a second project to define and implement an organisation-wide ECM platform using EMC Documentum, working within the scope defined by the enterprise methodology to best meet RailCorp’s business requirements.  The platform will establish the content management, search, collaboration and portal technologies within RailCorp, which will be the foundation for future ECM projects.
