Decline in overall security concern masks increasing worry about financial obligations – Unisys Security Index for May 20085.2 million Australians now extremely or very concerned about meeting essential financial obligations
Sydney, 1, May 2008: Australians have begun 2008 with a decreased level of overall concern about security related issues according to the Unisys Security Index TM released today.
A significant fall in the level of concern over National Security Issues including war or terrorism and health fears, pushed the overall Index down to levels not seen since 2006.
The May 2008 Unisys Security Index for Australia stands at 123, down 9 points since December 2007 and down 21 points from a high recorded in August 2007.
“The latest results show a clear shift away from the big picture concerns of national security,” said Vice President and General Manager of Unisys Asia Pacific, Andrew Barkla.
“This downward trend could be linked to several factors over the past few months including the change in Federal Government and perhaps a shifting of public debate to more domestic issues such as workforce participation and interest rates.
“However, trend analysis of the Unisys Security Index over the last 18 months shows the number of people concerned about their capacity to meet their most basic financial obligations has increased by an estimated 1.3 million people,” he said.
1 in 3 Australians now say that they are extremely or very concerned about meeting essential payments such as mortgages.
The key Unisys Security Index results for May 2008 are as follows:
The top issues of concern for Australians remain identity theft and financial fraud in equal measure in first place followed by the below two concerns in equal measure as the second highest concerns:
1. Unauthorised access to or misuse of personal information – 59% extremely or very concerned
The Unisys Security Index provides a unique insight into the attitudes of Australians on a wide range of security related issues.
Organisations and governments today confront potential security threats that didn’t exist a decade ago, or, if they did, were not seen as such a pressing concern. These security threats are global and their effects impact individuals on a daily basis. Unisys approach to security goes beyond ‘bits and bytes’ recognising that there are a broad set of political, economic and consumer forces that impact the security ‘ecosystem’. We believe that the most effective solutions are going to be those formed through collaboration across interests, sectors, borders and geographies.
