Unisys helps Aunties & Uncles get kids on their bikes

Unisys donates 15 bicycles to volunteer children’s support group

SYDNEY, 12 February, 2008 – Unisys employees from across Asia Pacific gathered in Sydney to build and donate 15 bicycles to children in the Aunties & Uncles™ mentoring program.

According to Rose George, CEO of Aunties & Uncles, the Aunties & Uncles program has helped thousands of disadvantaged children since 1974 and continues to rely on the commitment of their volunteer “Aunts” and “Uncles”.  Suitable volunteer mentors regularly provide friendship to children who are socially or emotionally at risk.  They are supported by a professional team of Area Coordinators across the Greater Sydney Metropolitan and Central Coast Areas.

The child-sized bicycles were assembled as part of a team building activity for Unisys employees designed to demonstrate the value and reward of collaboration and teamwork.

Joseph W. McGrath, Unisys president and chief executive officer, who was visiting Australia, joined Sydney based Asia Pacific Vice President and General Manager,  Andrew Barkla to present the bikes to Aunties & Uncles CEO Rose George and some of the children who will enjoy a new bike.

“We are delighted that Unisys chose the Aunties & Uncles program to receive the bikes assembled in the team building activity,” said Rose George, CEO of Aunties and Uncles.  “As a charity we rely on the support of individuals and organisations in the community and their professional networks, and I like to think that the Unisys employees got as much joy as I did in seeing the excitement on the faces of the children.”

Mr Barkla said:  “Knowing that by having our employees come together we could benefit others gave the activity much greater meaning. We knew that we were doing something that would give some special children great enjoyment and seeing their expressions was worth all the effort.   We are proud to support Aunties & Uncles with this donation.”

About Aunties & Uncles

Aunties & Uncles Co-operative Family Project Ltd is an "extended" family providing non-judgmental friendship and mentoring to children who are living in challenging family situations.  It is a registered charity with trained co-ordinators who assess and screen adult volunteers who are then trained in the role of mentoring a child.  The social and emotional needs of the child and their family are carefully considered to ensure that a suitable “link” is made with an appropriate volunteer. The volunteers, known as Aunts and Uncles commit to a minimum period of twelve months where they spend at least one weekend per month sharing quality time with their "linked" child (aged from six months to 12 years) providing stability and friendship in a caring environment.  Integral to the success of the mentoring relationship is the Area Coordinator who monitors and supports the families and mentors involved in the link through regular contact and advice.
